The American nightmare

America’s toxic racial politics cannot be allowed to take root in Britain

Being raised in predominantly working-class and super-diverse Luton — a town that experienced its fair share of troubles when it comes to ideological extremism — I was motivated to establish myself in the field of social cohesion. 

I care a great deal about the collective well-being of my community, town and country. While I have often said that Britain remains one of the finest examples of an advanced hyper-diverse democracy in the modern world, there exists an uncomfortable feeling within me that the country is at risk of losing its way — being distracted by the radical identity politics which is being manufactured across the pond in the United States. 

A growing number of American universities are increasingly forsaking robust critical thought in favour of pseudointellectual grievance theories — with much of this being imported into the UK by British “educationalists” who are, in reality, identitarian social-justice activists. The aggressive importation of US-origin pseudo-academic theories, which have a tendency to place racial identity at the heart of understanding very complex forms of social disadvantage and material deprivation, threatens to undermine the respectability of the British anti-racism movement. 

As I flesh out in my forthcoming book Beyond Grievance, the “disparities = discrimination” paradigm is a crudely reductive framework for understanding racial and ethnic differences in areas such as education and employment. The US’s broader identitarian-left movement is responsible for framing “disadvantage” and “privilege” through the simplistic prism of race, as well as vilifying traditional institutions such as the family and marriage, and aggressively promoting ultra-liberal forms of gender self-identification that pose a fundamental threat to women’s rights. 

Pandering to a radical but vocal minority will never help to unify diverse societies

Indeed, I would argue that the US’s exportation of radical identity politics is a gift for hostile anti-West foreign states that welcome intensifying forms of social fragmentation and moral decay in the western world. This is ultimately a form of ideological neo-imperialism that is designed to “civilise” industrialised nations where quietly traditional values — family-orientedness, personal responsibility, scepticism towards gender self-identification — continue to be somewhat influential in mainstream society. It is a cultural poison that threatens to undermine the very foundations of Western civilisation — and represents a fundamental assault on much of what is held dear by traditional ethnic-minority voters in the UK.

The contemporary British left’s enthusiastic embrace of tribal identity politics and radical social liberalism has presented the British political Right with an opportunity to build a cross-class, multi-ethnic coalition of voters who are patriotic, aspirational and have little time for niche minority interests which pose a fundamental threat to social solidarity. 

The modern British left’s importation of “progressive” identitarian initiatives from the other side of the Atlantic do not serve the UK well in terms of social cohesion. And nor is it clever politics, in a country where the majority of ethnic-minority citizens expect fairness, not favours, do not think “systemic racism” is a problem, and value their British identity. Pandering to a radical but vocal minority will never help to unify diverse societies — it only places them on the dreaded path towards greater social division and cultural fragmentation.

The left-wing identitarian trend we are witnessing in the English-speaking West, heavily influenced by American socio-political discourse surrounding matters of race, is serving to undermine the legacy of the old-fashioned anti-racist politics promoted by a historical figure I admire a great deal — Martin Luther King Jr. This traditional anti-racism was ultimately rooted in the fair allocation of political, legal and social rights and a rational approach to anti-discrimination policy. At the heart of this was the principle of equality of opportunity. 

The failing American experiment

This is reflected in one of King’s address to The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) at one of its annual conventions, where he spoke about “a dream of equality of opportunity, of privilege and property widely distributed; a dream of a land where men will not take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few”. At the core of MLK’s vision of a post-racial American nation-state was the combatting of rampant socio-economic inequalities regarding access to opportunities, high-quality public services, and private ownership. 

The toxic mixture of pseudointellectual race theories and racially-motivated discrimination which increasingly defines modern “anti-racist” activism is so far removed from traditional MLK-style equality. One of the most fundamental weaknesses of modern-day ‘progressive activism’ is opportunistically placing race at the forefront of discussions on multi-layered forms of social and economic disadvantage – thereby downplaying the effect of class-based barriers which threaten the personal advancement of underprivileged people of all races. This “hyper-racialisation” of socio-economic inequalities does not only trivialise the degree to which sections of the white-majority population are disadvantaged and anything but “privileged” – it is also guilty of overlooking forms of British ethnic-minority advancement rooted in family stability and community spirit. 

One of the primary responsibilities of British conservatives is to insulate their country from America’s aggressive exportation of divisive race-obsessed theories, radical gender-identity politics, and fervently anti-family agendas. The United States is the chief manufacturer of pseudointellectual theories which are unquestionably anti-family, anti-responsibility, and anti-cohesion — and it is undermining the West’s collective societal resilience in an increasingly multipolar world. 

The supposed “land of the free”, which has produced some of the greatest sociopolitical thinkers of the modern world, now represents one of the gravest cultural threats to race relations and community cohesion across the West. 

All British conservatives, including pro-US enthusiasts, have a duty to protect their own precious democracy from foreign ideological threats — especially those being exported from the bowels of the failing American experiment.
