We at The Critic firmly believe that we bring you the best in political and cultural commentary. We aim to inform and to entertain, and to provoke without succumbing to mere contrarianism. In an age of ideological groupthink and stylistic homogenisation — where writers depend on the crowd for their opinions and AI for their prose — we are proud to remain independent and ambitious.
This is a time of growth for The Critic. Throughout 2025 and the earlier months of 2026, we have been expanding our online output. The Critic Show entered the world of podcasts. We have redesigned and expanded our newsletters. We have been delighted to bring many talented new contributors onboard.
This comes with opportunities — but it also comes with costs. From next week, then, we are asking you to consider becoming not just a reader of The Critic’s online output, or a subscriber to our print magazine, but a subscriber to our site.
Join Britain’s most civilised publication.
Challenge the consensus. Access rigorous analysis.
This is not simply a request. It is also an offer. As an online subscriber to The Critic you will have exclusive access to the features, columns and reviews from our print magazine, as well as a rich archive of writing from our five years of previous editions. This means access to commentary and criticism from Helen Joyce, Yuan Yi Zhu, Marcus Walker, Chris Bayliss, Norman Lebrecht, Patrick Galbraith, Titania McGrath and many, many more.
Becoming an online subscriber to The Critic also means gaining access to daily exclusive online-only content from Critic columnists such as Robert Hutton, Tom Jones, Ben Sixsmith, Victoria Smith, Josephine Bartosch, Sebastian Milbank, Fred Sculthorp and more — offering perspectives on everything from the hot war in the Middle East to the culture war at home that you won’t find anywhere else. It will also mean access to the “Monday Morning Missive”, featuring news and views, and an exclusive column from our new political editor, Henry Hill.
Pricing will be a mere £1 a month for 3 months, rising to £5 a month afterwards. Current subscribers will have 3 months of free — yes, free — access while we prepare our print and online “bundle” offer.
Readers who are unable or as yet unwilling to join us should have no fear. We still plan to offer plentiful free writing on “Artillery Row”, at the high standards you have come to expect. If you join us next week, though — with all the details coming soon! — we are very confident that you will have no regrets.
