You might be surprised to learn that Corney & Barrow, the venerable London wine merchant which imports Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, also stocks many brilliant wines for under £20 a bottle. To show how good they are the more affordable end of the price range, Olivia Manning from C&B (no relation to the great novelist), has put together a case of summer bangers.
I know I’ve been a bit sniffy about pale rosé in the past, but when Provence is good, it’s unbeatable. Corney & Barrow Provence Rosé 2024 is made by Château La Tour de l’Evêque, the estate that pioneered the ultra-pale pink style. This offers all the white peaches and strawberries you could want, with a round, creamy texture. It’s a proper wine, not swimming pool water. Down from £16.25 to £15 a bottle (£180 for a case of 12).
Next up it’s Tunella Pinot Grigio 2024. This shows how good this variety can be up in the hills of Friuli. It’s a gorgeous thing: pure, saline, with an almond note on the finish. It would be superb with fritto misto or spaghetti alle vongole. Down from £15.75 to £15 a bottle (£180 for a case of 12).
And finally the ultimate summer red: Fleurie, the lightest style of Beaujolais. Fleurie La Madone, Domaine Lathuilière-Gravallon 2024 is made by a top producer and has that famous Fleurie fragrance and only 12.5 per cent alcohol. Down from £17.95 to £17, £204 a case.
Don’t be afraid to chill it and serve it with any food under the sun. In fact, these are all wines for enjoying over long, leisurely lunches under the pergola or British equivalent.
