It would be naive to think freedom of speech is safe

An Egyptian anti-Christianity activist should not have been imprisoned

Enough of the silence and weasel words

Or else this precedent could silence dissent

We must stand up to intimidation

We have to protect cultural history

I was acquitted — but I should never have been arrested

This book is not a history of ideas, nor book history, nor cultural history, but something much more

We must sweep aside today’s pervasive fearfulness. Instead we should feel free to offend — and not take offence when others treat us equally robustly
